Forum Description

We've been exploring Self-Mastery and the three most important concepts connected to mastery of ourselves:
  • Not Blaming
  • Owning It and Choosing our Response-ability
  • Making Conscious Choices
All of these concepts relate to ourselves, and taking ownership and accountability for our thoughts, feelings, behaviour and the choices we make that accumulate over time to create the Life we now live. The final concept in this lesson is "Accountability". As indicated in the paragraph above, accountability can be internally applied to ourselves as well as externally in relation to other people.

Holding Ourselves Accountable

The first most important aspect of accountability is that it feels good to hold ourselves accountable to what we say we want and what we commit to doing. This can be in relation to what we tell other people we will do for them, as well as what we say that we want and commit to ourselves to do in relation to our own dreams and goals. Holding ourselves accountable is saying that what we want is important and worth our own attention, focus, energy and time. It's saying that we're worth prioritizing and that we're important. Holding ourselves accountable helps us build self-trust and self-esteem. If we can honour a commitment to our own self, then we believe that we're trustworthy humans and able to be worthy of the trust of others. Holding ourselves accountable in relation to other people feels good too because it shows that we respect them and the commitment we've made to them and that they can trust us and rely on us.

Holding Others Accountable

The second important aspect of accountability is that although we do not blame and take ownership and choose our response-ability by making conscious choices in our lives, we also hold others accountable to the things they say that they will do. Not blaming and taking ownership for our lives does not absolve other people from their part or the agreements they make with us about the role they will play in our lives. It is entirely fair for us to hold others accountable to what they have agreed and committed to. By doing so we are telling ourselves that we are important and worthy of being respected and treated with dignity and integrity. Holding others accountable doesn't always feel easy or comfortable. Sometimes it can create difficult conversations and conflict and require us to step into uncomfortable spaces. We'll share more about the ways you can navigate those kinds of challenging engagements with others, later on in the programme. For now, we're going to look at areas of our life and assess our level of self-mastery. Click "Mark Complete" to move on to the assignment "Mastery of Myself".
